It was used by the cavalry units of the US Army in the North African Campaign and the invasion of Sicily. The M3A1 Scout Car was a popular collector's item and was used in various cavalry units throughout the war. By mid-1943, the drawbacks of the design were evident, and most US Army units replaced the M3A1 with enclosed armored vehicles. However, some limited numbers were retained and employed in Normandy and some Pacific islands. The M3A1 Scout Car was also supplied via the Lend-Lease Program to allied nations, including Britain and the Soviet Union, where it remained in service until at least 1947.
