The Kfz 2 Einheits-Pkw was part of a larger initiative to standardize military vehicles for the Wehrmacht. The Einheits-PKW came in three general classifications: Leichter (light), Mittlerer (medium), and Schwerer (heavy). Each classification had its own specifications and was designed to carry different payloads and passengers. The Einheits-PKW was intended to replace the diverse fleet of two-wheel drive, militarized civilian vehicles previously procured by the Reichswehr. The vehicles were built from 1936 to 1943, with a total production of around 60,000 four-wheel drive, off-road capable passenger cars and about 13,000 6x6 trucks. Despite its ambitious design, the Einheits-PKW was ultimately deemed unfit for war-time service by the Wehrmacht by 1938.
