The German military's rail arm, known as the Panzerzuege, was directly controlled by the military and was used to assist in the transportation of goods and troops. The Deutsche Reichsbahn's last major peacetime assignment prior to the war was to transport non-motorized divisions to staging positions along the Polish border. This task was successfully accomplished by the Deutsche Reichsbahn before the start of the war.
